Excellent amp for the money. I have used numerous amps over the years ranging in price and quality (from the comically underrated pricey Rockford Punch series to the comically overrated cheapo Pyramid Audio amps that added a couple of zeros to the end of the wattage ratings). I’ve rattled windows and cracked my own windshield, which was the only time I was ever proud to damage my car. I have a couple of decades of novice experience playing with car amps. Or in other words, I’m old.
Anyway, I was thrilled to get to try out this amp from Planet Audio. The construction quality and appearance of the amp is excellent. This does not look like a cheap amp. I have been able to get excellent clean powered sound from this thing so far driving two pairs of Kicker 6.5 inch speakers rated at peak power capacity of 300W per speaker (or peak total draw of 1200W). This is fairly high for 6.5 inch speakers, so for most consumer applications you will not need an amp nearly that powerful. The PL1600.4 definitely delivers WAY more power than needed for my setup using only these four speakers. But you can never have too much power (if used wisely), so for the money I think this is a great way to power a four speaker setup that will really get the most out of your speakers.
The amp is chocked full of great features. It can accept speaker level or line level inputs, and you can adjust the sensitivity. It also has a low pass crossover (absolute must for subs) and hookup for a wired subwoofer remote (a nice but not necessary feature). So you can power regular speakers AND sub(s) with this unit. If you are on a tight budget, I would say for the money just this one amp should meet your needs….
