Great speaker for $60. I mean REALLY, REALLY great speaker. But not definitely not a PRO quality speaker. Not even close.
This is a tough review to make.
First of all, I need to mention two things. One I have bought some 10 inch Planet Audios for cheap on Amazon and I love them. I really do. They are in my car and have a nice amp on them and they work amazing.
2nd, I did not buy these for a car, but to replace some PA speakers that blew. The price was great and I was hoping since these are dual voice, I could wire them to 8 ohm, which did work. I put a decent crossover in the box, but I was not really happy with the result. I did buy a much more expensive crossover and try it again, but was still not happy. That being said, these really are just meant for bass, nothing else. Meaning, they will not work well in a 2-way crossover over experience. you will need some full range speakers or a 3 way system.
I am putting more details below.
Pros:
Prime shipping (Amazing Prime rocks).
Great Price
Low Base
Nice packaging.
Visually, VERY nice looking speaker (really nice actually - both front and backside).
Heavy, Heavy magnet
Dual Voice Coils (can wire them 8 ohm, 4 ohm or 2 ohm).
Can handle (it says) a lot of power.
Amazon took car of my return concerns
Cons:
No mids, just bass. I mean, NONE. You still need a crossover, but still none.
They really suck power. You need a lot of power - without a lot power, they are not very loud.
You might really need to spend some time tweaking you sound out to make these work.
does not tell me the voice coil size (I am just curious)
flat sound (without mids, it is not very warm sounding).
This is not a pro or con.
I did learn, PA speakers, have flat stops (no bubble on the foam on outside of speaker). These were HUGE. My grill cover (if you want to call it that) would not fit write. It was pressing on them.
Also, some people dont like heavy magnets. I definitely do.
If all you want it bass and more bass and you want something cheap and you like it low and you like to feel it. These "might" work great. Probably even get the 18s vs the 15s. Same speaker, just bigger and will push more air. You will still need some power and REALLY think about how you set up your sound. If You are looking for high end sound ... I mean really, REALLY good sounding music, vocals, and beats and really want that over JUST bass, get something else.
One thing I learned after this. If you want more sound (fuller, wider), get a sub with a bigger voice coil (this was average at best) and make sure it has a very high (near 100 or over) sensitivity (this was 89). The Pyle Professional (PA 8 ohm speakers) had a HUGE 4" voice coil with a 103 sensitivity and a 200oz magnet. The same amp created sound that was much, MUCH fuller, warmer and TWICE (seriously) as loud. My bass still thumps louder and tighter, and new speakers blow these away. These are $60 on amazon, those are $120 on amazon. They are not car speakers and they are not dual voice coil either. So they won't work in a car (unless you get two and wire them correctly). These obviously failed my PA system "experiment". I will use them for something else eventually. I also (fyi) have no idea the voice coil size on these by the way.
BTW, you can speaker over $1000 on a subwoofer if you were really nuts. I do know that.
I learned a lot doing this. I really did. Planet Audio does make other louder, bigger speakers. These were at the bottom of their 15s. So money matters too. I decided I had to make an investment and move to something different.
So after all that ranting, if you are just starting out, for the money, these may be perfect. Although these are cheaper and not a pro-end car speaker, they are great speakers. The con here, is these are not pro speakers. However, dont expect them to be. That being said, if I did not know much and I just saw them in a store, I bet someone would pay $100 each for them. They are not cheap looking speakers. Sound matters too. They do handle and need a lot of power, but if you do it right, they will work and they will move air. You can create good sound with good speakers and good equipment, or you can EQ the hell out of it (only works to a degree).
One last FYI. There is something in the material that means Amazon had to ship them differently. Even though they are Prime, they took a few extra days to get here. Also because of the material in them, because they did not work out, I could not return them, even though they were Prime. I did contact Amazon about this and explained my concern and they had to talk to management. They eventually agreed to refund my money and I even got kept the speakers (there was no way to return them via Prime on standard UPS shipping) --- SUPER WEIRD. However, they did not work for my use. Apparently, Prime or no Prime, they are not shipped like normal speakers. I have bought other speakers and they did not have this issue (they were shipped fine via Prime). It was not a fun experience on the phone, it was frustrating at first, Amazon did take care of me, and to note, I spend a lot of money with Amazon. (I have 1000s of orders, I buy there daily).
So anyways, at the end, was it worth $60, probably yes.
Did I use them. NOPE.
Did I hate them, No, but I also had a very special case, and these were the wrong speakers.
Would I recommend Planet Audio. YES. I do love my my 10 woofers in my car. They are amazing. I think I paid $26 each ($52 total with prime FREE shipping)
If I have to say anything. Start cheap, learn. They buy the one you want. These are good to learn on. Small investment. If you know what you are doing and have the money, you dont have to spend a lot, but these may not be the right ones. You can even look at some of Planet Audio other subs, they have some others - some look pretty cool. Planet Audio is way better than BOSS or even most PYLE (fyi). It just depends if you are buying low end or high end. But even high end Planet Audio is not Rockford Fosgate or whatever is the best these days (I am old school, or just OLD I guess).
Are these PRO quality. Not even close.
Anyways. Have fun and good luck.
